For several years the only teeth whitening kit available from Boots was Rapid White. This has recently changed as they now stock the all new iWhite Instant for home teeth whitening. It brings a new peroxide-free option for home teeth whitening to the high street but is it any good?

What is iWhite Instant?

The iWhite Instant teeth whitening kit from Boots uses a one-size-fits-all mouth tray system. The pack contains 10, ready to use flexible mouth trays that are pre-loaded with whitening gel. Each one can be used for 20 minutes at a time, pressed on to the front and back of the teeth.

Unlike many home teeth whitening kits, iWhite Instant uses ‘white bio-active crystals’ to add a thin white film to the surface of teeth instead of simply removing or bleaching stains.

It also contains a antibacterial and fungicide bleach additive called Phtalimid-peroxo-caproic-acid (PAP). This ingredient was
especially developed as an additive for washing and cleaning at low temperatures.

The combination is a teeth whitening kit that’s designed to gently bleach stains while adding a ‘optical whitening effect’ to teeth at the same time.

Does iWhite Instant work?

The claim from iWhite is that it will make teeth up to 8 shades whiter. Based in the product ingredients, this seems a little optimistic. While it’s gentle ingredients will avoid causing sensitive teeth like some peroxide based gels the application method alone probably gives this kit limited whitening power.

A one size fits all mouth tray pre loaded with whitening gel might sound convenient but the reality is that we all have different sizes and shapes of teeth in our mouths. This is why dentists go to the effort of making bespoke mouth trays for professional teeth whitening.

Other home teeth whitening kits address this issue with warm and form trays that mould to the shape of you teeth. This ensures that the gel remains in contact with the teeth for the required duration.

– Once an individual tray has been opened, the product needs to be used within 30 minutes so you don’t want to waste time messing around getting them fixed in place.
