We first reviewed activated charcoal for teeth whitening a few years ago, since then it’s gone from being a weird solution to teeth whitening to an entire product range from many manufacturers and different flavours.

What is activated charcoal?

It’s not a revolutionary new ingredient developed for teeth whitening, activated charcoal is commonly used to remove toxins and chemicals in the body. Most organic compounds can bind to the surface of activated charcoal which prevents it from being absorbed by the body in event of poisoning or overdose for example.

This same principle applied to how it is used for teeth whitening. Activated charcoal has millions of tiny pores on it’s surface which attract and absorb the plaque and stains from the teeth. The result is whiter teeth and an improved pH balance in the mouth, helping prevent bad breath and gum disease.

How to use Activated Charcoal Teeth Whitening Powder

Dip a wet toothbrush in to a small amount of the powder and gently brush all over the teeth. You shouldn’t scrub too hard, just enough to spread it over the stained teeth for a couple of minutes. Try to avoid rubbing the gums as it can cause irritation. Once done, rise thoroughly with water and proceed to brush with normal toothpaste to remove any remaining black.

You can either apply the activated charcoal powder with an old toothbrush or buy a brush that uses super soft black bristles. Their soft bristles are hard wearing but gentle on teeth and gums plus they are already black!
