8 Weird Ways to Whiten Teeth

Teeth Whitening Home Remedies

Anyone who has put time in to looking online for ways to whiten teeth at home will have noticed that there are some really weird sounding ideas out there. Are they all science fiction or do any of these online teeth whitening tips actually work?

Here’s our top 8 weird ways to whiten teeth:

1. Strawberries

Everyone loves strawberries, right? Well what could be easier than smushing them all over your teeth to make them whiter. That’s the idea behind our first home whitening solution, simply crush strawberries in to a paste and apply to for 5 minutes. Apparently you can also mix crushed strawberries with a little baking soda for added whitening power.

The malic acid in the strawberries is said to remove surface discolouration on teeth with a little help from the baking soda.

Even if this could whiten teeth, it’s not something that should be repeated frequently due to the damaging effects of the acid on the tooth enamel.

2. Lemon Juice

This one is surprisingly popular, however whitening teeth with lemon juice is not recommended. Although the citric acid found in lemons is a natural bleach and good general purpose stain-remover it can strip the tooth enamel of calcium.

A long term effect of damaged enamel is that teeth will become more yellow and reverse all your hard work.

3. Carrots

As well as being used as a natural tooth brush, carrots contain vitamin A, which is needed for healthy tooth enamel. There are a few other crunchy vegetables like broccoli, celery and cucumbers that get the saliva going, aiding in getting rid of tooth stains.

4. Baking Soda

Almost every home teeth whitening article mentions using baking soda, you can even buy toothpaste that contains baking soda, but does it work?

This common cooking ingredient can help to remove plaque from teeth which will help regain some whiteness. It’s abrasive qualities will however damage tooth enamel if used too often and you will probably be better off to use a high quality whitening toothpaste instead of trying to make your own.

5. Cheese

Apparently studies have been made that suggest eating cheese potentially helps to prevent tooth decay and promote enamel re-mineralization. Healthy teeth are more likely to be whiter teeth seems to be the idea behind this one.

6. Aloe Vera

It’s proven as a burn treatment or skin ointment but Aloe Vera has no clinical evidence to suggest that it whitens teeth. Despite this, some claim that it has natural bleaching properties and it’s sometimes added to whitening products.

Although fairly harmless to apply to teeth, swallowing Aloe Vera can cause severe intestinal cramps or diarrhoea so caution is advised!

7. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties. It’s these natural properties that supports claims it can help whiten teeth. Less bacteria in your mouth results in less plaque build up on teeth so more of you natural whiteness can shine through. The most common method is to use coconut oil for oil pulling to whiten teeth.

8. Wood ash

This is our weirdest way to whiten teeth, not because we think it works but because it’s hard to believe that anyone would actually do this for whiter teeth.

Is there any science behind this myth? Hard woods contain high levels of potassium hydroxide which can whiten teeth over time. The problem is really knowing how much potassium hydroxide you are collecting from your fire place because only some woods contain enough to make it worth while.

Another problem with this weird home whitening solution is that it’s very harsh on teeth and can actually cause damage to tooth enamel.
